WELCOME BACK!

Dear Parents & Students:
Welcome back to a new year and a new semester! I look forward to working with you for the next 30 days until Mrs. Flores returns.  I Hope you are all rested and ready to work on our new lesson.  We will be watching the movie "The Great Debaters" produced by the actor Denzel Washington.

This movie tells the triumph over prejudice and ignorance, based on true events.  In 1935, in the South, Profesor Mel Tolson teaches his students the art of debate.  Soon, this all-black university forms an invincible team, that goes against big all-white schools and...wins!

At that time in America, black students were not welcome on the campuses of major universities. But the team of Profesor Tolson scores victory after victory and other Universities can no longer ignore or keep them out.  "Work hard and you can achieve" says Professor Tolson. "Do what you've got to do so you can do want you want to do."

The Wiley College debate team members are unknown, until they set foot in Harvard University.  Soon, everyone discovers that these young people: Harry Lowe, James Farmer and Samantha Booke, with the guidance of their teacher, Prof. Tolson, will debate until the finish.

Please study the new vocabulary words given to you today.  Study 5 or 6 words a day, so by the end of the month, you will be ready to know spelling and definition of each word.  Our new vocabulary words are: prejudice, ignorance, inspiration, debate, achieve, philosophy, sharecropper, lynching, bigotry, bigot, opponent, concede, argumentative, extraneous, formulaic, evidence, overpowering, anecdote, fallacy, research

As always, I am here if you have any questions or concerns. Please speak to me at any time. Sincerely, Mrs. Soto
